Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple

Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple is located at a distance of about 18 Km from Warangal. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the most famous temples of the Telangana region. The temple has an ancient history and dates back to 11th century. The temple was built by Kakatiya rulers; hence the influence of Karkatiya architecture can be clearly seen on the temple.  Significance of this temple can be understood from the fact that thousands of devotees visit this temple everyday throughout the year.

History of Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple

The temple was built during the time of Karkatiya Dynasty. As per the legends, the temple was built by Ayyanna Deva, a minister of Kakatiya Kingdom. It  is said that one day Lord Mallikarjuna came in the dream of a shepherded and asked him to make the hill Indrakeeladri and preserve it in a Putta Matti (Soft earth ) to fulfill the desires of the devotees. All the devotees who come here believes that their desires are fulfilled by worshipping the deity Mallikarjuna Swamy Devasthanam.

The temple is located in a small cave and dates back to 11th century, when Karkatiya Dynasty was the ruler of this region. The temple on its eastern side has a giant magnificent Nruthaya Mandapam. There are 108 pillars in this temple. The famous rocky giant gates known as the Historical Kakatiya Keerti Toranams were initially build here and later at Warangal fort. You will find rich architectural carvings on all four entrance gates of the temple.

Festivals of Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple

Makar Sankranti is the most famous festival celebrated at Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple from the name of Komuravelli Mallanna Brahmotsavam. Special transport arrangements are provided by Andhra Pradesh government to all devotees during the festival as the festival is celebrated at a huge level.
